Social Structures
A social structure is something that is constructed to enhance the relationship between people through design. Designers of these structures feel that they are solving social problems through their projects, which affects communities and individuals on a personal level. Projects are related to addressing some basic needs such as shelter, communication, food security, safety, and intimacy.
As part of our Community Collaborations program local designer-builder Matt Wolpe will be worked with City Slickers Farms on a collaborative design project to teach community members build their own chicken tractors. The chicken tractor is an element in City Slickers’ vision to help residents of West Oakland to be more self sufficient and food secure. This project is an example of designers trying to engage underserved communities and provide innovative solutions to problems.
More information about the class can be found here – http://chickentractorproject.wordpress.com/

Beyond Bicycles

The Gossamer Albatross crossed the English Channel in 1979. For more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gossamer_Albatross
This is a call for work – Artists, Thinkers, Creators – We seek your human-powered machines, bicycle-based inventions, and interactive kinetic sculpture. In May of 2010, Rock Paper Scissors Collective is hosting BEYOND BICYCLES a celebration of the art, science, and politics of harnessing human power. Our inspiration is the bicycle, a simple machine that has transformed our experience of moving through the world. We see the bicycle as possibility, the tip of the big ol’ iceberg of human potential energy.
BEYOND BICYCLES will be an exhibition documenting the many ingenious uses of human power past and present. The Gallery space at Rock Paper Scissors Collective is limited so large works will only be displayed during opening night. Our month long exhibition will consist of a collection large color photographs of works, accompanied by a printed zine. There will also be a web zine which will be more extensive than the printed version.
We invite you to send us your work – past, present and future. What do you do with your potential and what do you believe is possible? Please send us digital images (no more than 10M at a time), specifications and descriptions. If you have video, please send us a link. We will accept proposals if your work is as yet unrealized. Include your contact information and let us know whether or not your work will be available for the May 7th opening. If your work is chosen, please be prepared to write a one to three page piece (how-to, history, etc.) about it for the exhibition zine.
The submission deadline is March 15th.

Food Justice
Rock Paper Scissors Collective presents “Food Justice” Opening Reception at Art Murmur, Friday November 7th, 2008 6-9 pm
on display from November 7th – November 28th, 2008
Rock Paper Scissors Collective has collaborated with local community organizations, artists, and individuals passionate about food justice to take part in a month long exhibition examining the theme as it pertains to the Oakland community. The gallery will feature the photography of City Slickers’ Backyard Gardeners. These West Oakland residents used Holga cameras to capture the people and concerns of their neighborhood – an under served urban neighborhood where food justice is a key issue. The participants, both frustrated and inspired by their surroundings, took pictures of their neighborhood as part of a workshop led by Artist/Teacher CB Smith-Dahl. Their work reflects both the challenges and the spirit of change prevalent in West Oakland.
Also shown in the gallery include chronicles of the Secret Cafe, provided by DIY-cafe creator and cook Christine Manoux. Forage Oakland presents maps of food-foraging locations in the East Bay. In addition, RPS exhibits works by the Hayward Nutritional Learning Community Project, East Bay Asian Youth Center, and People’s Grocery.
In conjunction with Art Murmur’s gallery openings, Rock Paper Scissors operates a street fair each month on 23rd Street. In addition to the usual local craft/artist vendors, OBUGS youth interns will present a cooking demonstration, Oakland Food Connection will offer information about nutrition education and youth development, and People’s Grocery will let you know how you can help build a local food system that improves the health and economy of the West Oakland community.
The food-related events do not stop on First Friday. Keep an eye on the RPS web calendar for food themed classes, such as vegan cooking, Sauerkraut Making, chef talks and more which will be introduced throughout the month.
