Gallery: Call for Work

Food Justice

Rock Paper Scissors Collective is currently looking for community organizations, artists, and individuals passionated about Food Justice to take part in our month long exhibition in November 2008. The opening night is the First Friday of the month. We are currently working with a local West Oakland artist who will be leading classes with City Slickers' Backyard Gardeners to create a photography project to exhibit in our gallery space. There is plenty of wall and event space and we'd love to include all organizations currently active in the area. There is room to exhibit art work related to food justice, food politics, urban gardening, and all relevant subjects. Also, we would love to highlight any projects organizations are working on either inside our gallery, or on the street during the First Friday Street Fair on 23rd during the monthly Art Murmur. Some ideas we had: cooking and selling fresh and locally made food to the gallery crowd outside, a separate workshop at RPS on some aspect of urban gardening, any fundraising ideas any group has.

RPS also hopes to include a mapping project in the exhibit. First, we hope to have a large map printed on the wall marking all food sites in West Oakland-----and we'd love to work with a youth organization on this community map. Secondly, we want to go to a variety of organizations (primarily, but not limited to West Oakland, its just the district we are in) with maps of the area and have participants map what they ate that day and where they got it from. These maps will be part of the exhibition and the same blank map will be up in the gallery opening reception for those onlookers/gallery viewers to map their consumption.

Screenprinting Update

You're probably wondering..

Where did the screenprinting go? Well, it's not around for the moment, but it's coming back. we're joining a group of screen printing homies at a new lab. And it's still getting set up.

But when it does - and when we get our teaching staff and schedule all worked out - there will be some new screen printing classes offered, namely:

  • a six week master screen printing course
  • a tee shirt screen printing class

We'll also be keeping around some old standards - Photo and Non-Photo Screen printing. But let's call them "Screen printing on Paper" and "Screen printing at home."

I can see you raising your hand over there. you want to know when right? Well, I can tell you that it will be going on by June - hopefully earlier.

And by the way - thank you, thank you, thank you to Lobot Gallery for being so kick ass and letting us host a weekly night at their Screen Printing Lab for the past TWO YEARS!!!
