pedal powered washing machine needs a home

Hey folks -

Are you tired of wasting energy on your washing machine. Feel like lowering the ol PG&E bills and raising the power of your legs? Well we’ve got just the thing for you!

Aaron, who built the human-powered washing machine that appeared in Beyond Bicycles this month, is looking for temporary home for the washer. It’d be good if it gets a lot of use, so if you live in a big house and are open to letting your friends and neighbors in on the action, it’s a plus!

interested – send an email to beyondbikes _[at]_rpscollective(dot)com

Crossing the Line – A Metaphor for Constructing Artistic Engagement for Peace

Join us on this Memorial day weekend presentation to contemplate the price of peace and exchange ideas about how art can be used as both disruptive and constructive social action for change.

The act of crossing the line in civil disobedience is presented as a metaphor in clarifying the intention of one’s artistic practice in working toward peace.  By ” loving the soldier and loathing the war,” this inclusive metaphor holds a space of honor for service women and men who walk the line for us, and how as artists we hold and cross the line to preserve their sacrifice.

Suellen Semekoski will show digital portraits – faces of the unreported that creatively graced the marches from various peace marches (Chicago, London, DC) over the eight years of the Bush reign. Their stories and ideas from Pace e Bene non-violence training are woven together to form what was once  described as ” a strange family album, where nobody looks alike but, I feel like I know these people”.

Suellen is an artist, art therapist, adjunct associate professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has done the facilitator training at Pace e Bene non-violence service in Oakland. She is delighted to be joining Rock Paper Scissor Collective for this Memorial Day weekend!

Artist DJs will be spinning tunes while we cover the blank space with marker. You are invited to draw and then dance, to dance and then draw, or to do both at the same time! The artwork will remain on display through the weekend. Come and leave your mark in the museum!

Preceded at 6 p.m. by one of our favorite KALX DJs spinning in the lobby, where wine and beer are available for purchase.

Handmade Nation

We are proud to announce that we will be doing a screening of Handmade Nation, a documentary about DIY culture in America.

Faythe Levine traveled 19,000 miles to document what has emerged as a marriage between historical technique, punk culture, and the d.i.y. ethos. For HANDMADE NATION she and Cortney Heimerl have selected 24 makers and 5 essayists who work within different media and have different methodologies to provide a microcosm of the crafting community. Participants in this community share ideas and encouragement through websites, blogs, boutiques, galleries, and craft fairs. Together they have forged a new
economy and lifestyle based on creativity, determination, and networking.
twenty-four artists from Olympia, Washington to Providence, Rhode Island, and everywhere in between show their work and discuss their lives.

The screening will be held on February 12th at 7pm, followed by a talk with director Faythe Levine. Admission is a sliding scale of $7-$10 at the door.
